Pediatric MassagePediatric Massage

Pediatric massage includes massage for toddlers, Pre-school and school age children, as well as adolescents and young adults.  Children at each stage of growth and development have different physical, emotional, and psychological needs.  Techniques are tailored to each child's needs to create a positive experience and can be learned by parents for use at home.  This service is offered at my office as well as at home or in the hospital.

Many healthcare professionals have long known the benefits of massage therapy for their pediatric patients. Pediatric Massage is a one of a variety of complementary and alternative medical therapies often used in conjunction with conventional medical treatment to reduce side effects and improve the overall state of a child’s health.

Research has shown that massage therapy can ease both physical symptoms as well as, emotional discomforts associated with pediatric medical conditions.  Studies conducted by the Touch Research Institutes at the University Of Miami School Of Medicine show that massage can alleviate pain, anxiety and depression in pediatric clients.  This healing touch therapy also provides comfort, relaxation, reduction of stress hormones and relief from chronic conditions such as asthma, nausea, constipation and muscle aches.

Immediately after receiving massage, children with mild to moderate juvenile rheumatoid arthritis notice decreased anxiety and stress hormone (cortisol) levels. For young patients with Autism their aversion to touch decreases while their ability to focus increases with massage as well as CranioSacral therapy.  Pediatric patients with cystic fibrosis report feeling less anxious, and their ability to breathe and pulmonary functions improved.

The essence of massage for children is providing safe and loving touch that encourages a positive experience, it can help your child —and you— have a more active role in your child’s health.  It helps your child focus on health, not on illness.  Massage as well as other therapies engage your child’s whole body, mind and spirit — not just the symptoms of a physical problem.

Through massage or a combination of complementary and alternative therapies, children can learn a new respect for what their body can do and feel, and gain confidence in their ability to create a sense of personal well-being.
